Tehran is the capital and largest city of Iran (Persia). Tehran is a mega city located at the foot of the Alborz mountain range (the highest point in the Middle East (18,000 ft)) with an immense network of highways unparalleled in West Asia. 

Tehran is the largest city in the Middle East, the most populated city in South Western Asia with a population of 7,404,515 and approximately 15 million in Greater Tehran.

Tehran’s climate is defined by its various geographic locations.With the towering Alborz Mountains to its North and the central desert to the South. It can be generally described as mild in the spring, hot and dry in the summer, cool and rainy in autumn and cold in the winter.

Most Iranian industries are headquartered in Tehran, such as automobiles manufacturers, electrical equipment, textiles, sugar, cement, and chemical products. It is also a leading center for business. There is also an oil refinery located in south of the city.

Tehran is famous for its numerous International ski and snow boarding resorts on the Alborz slopes such as Dizin and Shemshak, large museums, art centers, hiking and biking trails, beautiful landscapes at the mountain slopes and also its palace complexes. Excavations place the existence of settlements in Tehran as far back as 6000 BCE.

(Yay! for our four distinctive seasons!..nay to all that polution dang it!–gee Austin TX is always hot-but I love that place too–) I have to admit that I constantly have to explain to people that we don’t live in tents or in deserts, the deserts in Iran are not livable and we don’t ride camels: they would have a hard time in Tehran ducking cars, living in apartments, climbing mountains, skiing or slipping on winter ice  ;-)

So as a note I will be adding this directly from wikipedia for a read, if you aren’t a wikipedia fan there are tons of online resources that will explain why Persian is the word. And well, I believe us Persians know better,..because afterall ..we invented the language.

“In the outside world, the official name of Iran from the 6th century BC until 1935 was Persia or similar foreign language translations (La Perse, Das Persien, Perzie, etc.).

In 1935, the government asked the international community to call the country by the name “Iran”.

 A few years later, some Persian scholars protested  that changing the name had separated the country from its past, so in 1959 the government  announced that both terms could officially be used interchangeably.

Now both terms are common, but

“Iran” is used mostly in the modern political context and “Persia” in a cultural and historical context.
